Yogi clears bumper Rs 26,000 cr payment to sugarcane farmers

The Yogi-Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government has cleared 75 percent sugarcane dues with bumper Rs 26,000 crore to farmers.

According to a report, despite the consumption of sugar has reduced and the government is already facing an additional financial burden in recent times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the UP government has made a record disbursement of funds to clear the dues in the season.

The additional chief secretary of the cane development department, Sanjay Bhoosreddy informed how the government has been taking several measures to ensure on-time payments to sugarcane farmers by tagging cane products other than sugar.

Notably, the government has also tagged ethanol (by-product of cane) for the payments and due to the recent increase in production and sale of ethanol, the cane price also went up.

Bhoosreddy said, “Payment of over Rs 1.40 lakh crore made to around 45 lakh farmers in last four years is the highest in absolute number till date.” He further added that the state government had worked exponentially in the economic interest and all-around development of the farmers across the state.

After coming to power in 2017, the BJP government created an escrow account under the supervision of the district cane officer/senior cane development officer. As per the norms, 85% of the money received in this account is kept for payments to the farmers.

It is worth mentioning that as many as 39 sugarcane mills out of 120 mill, have cleared 100% of payment of the current season. Another set of 26 mills have also completed 80% of the payments.
