Home ministry cuts internet at protestors’ sites; Farmers promise unrest

A fresh stand-off is brewing between Centre and protesting farmers after Union home ministry temporarily suspended internet services in Singhu, Ghazipur and Tikri protesting sites till 11 pm on Sunday to “maintain public safety and averting public emergency.”

Darshan Pal, leader of Krantikari Kisan Union who is facing police action for law and order problem in the Capital on Republic Day demanded restoration of internet services where agitation is on. “Otherwise we will hold demonstration against it in the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, prime minister Narendra Modi, in an all-party meeting, said that Centre’s proposal to suspend the three new agricultural laws for 18 months still stands. He urged the leaders of the political parties to convey this to their supporters.

“I want to reiterate what Narendra Singh Tomar told farmers. He said-we’ve not reached consensus but we’re giving you (farmers) the offer and you may go and deliberate. He told farmers that he was just a phone call away,” said the prime minister.

In the all-party meet, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, TMC’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Shiv Sena’s Vinayak Raut and SAD’s Balwinder Singh Bhunder, beside the prime minister, spoke at length.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that the Centre is just hedging the issue out of its egoistic and obstinate mindset.

Meanwhile, retired and current officers of Delhi Police, members of families of police personnel who were injured during the tractors’ rally of farmers on January 26, and Delhi Police mahasangh staged a demonstration at Shaheedi Park in protest against the attack.
