Modi announces Health Mission: All citizens could have a ‘health card’

A landmark moment in India’s history was announced by prime minister Narendra Modi while addressing the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort in the Capital on the occasion of the 74th Independence Day.

The prime minister launched the National Digital Health Mission today, elaborating that every citizen of the country would have a “health card”, a unique ID through which a database of his health records would be maintained.

However, this would be an optional facility for the citizens, unlike Aadhaar card which is now mandatory for all.

In an apt announcement, given how the countrymen have roiled under the impact of ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, the National Digital Health Mission would be a game-changer in many respects.

A person’s medical history, records such as tests, diagnosis and treatments will be saved in a digital format as database. Any medical professional could access the information, of course given the permission by the card holder. He won’t have to carry medical records and reports any longer.

Hospitals, clinics and doctors would be linked to a central server. This is an optional service though.

The scheme would be implemented in phases.

Its likely to bridge the gap between urban and rural India.
