Modi to visit Germany on May 1; would also go to France

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Germany and hold bilateral talks on May 1-2. He will also visit Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark. From there, the Prime Minister may also proceed to France – which will elect its President on April 24.

PM Modi’s visit to three European countries comes at a time when India is under pressure to downsize its relationship with Russia after its military attack on Ukraine.

Germany and France have taken tough stand on Russia and imposed sanctions, while India has so far taken neutral stand even as it has sought for immediate cessation of violence and respect for nation’s sovereignty.

Germany has announced a series of economic and military packages for Ukraine. India has also dispatched humanitarian aid to Kyiv.

In the last couple of weeks, leaders from several countries have visited India to explain sanctions on Russia. Last week, PM Modi held a virtual summit with US President Biden to discuss defence and security issues. Currently, UK PM Boris Johnson is in India for a two-day visit. He will be meeting PM Modi today in Delhi.

Ahead of his meeting with PM Modi, Boris Johnson said the partnership of two democracies (India and UK) is vital as the world faces growing threats from autocratic states. “Looking forward to meeting with my friend @NarendraModi today in New Delhi. From climate change to energy security to defence, the partnership of our democracies is vital as the world faces growing threats from autocratic states,” he wrote on Twitter.
