Ravish’s brother, once accused of sex charges by a minor, gets Congress ticket in Bihar

Brajesh Pandey, brother of NDTV anchor Ravish Kumar will be party’s candidate from the Govindganj assembly in Bihar.

On Thursday, just hours before the process of the second phase nomination ended, congress released its final list of 49 candidates for the remaining two phases of elections.

The list mentioned the name of Brajesh Pandey from the Govindganj constituency in the East Champaran district. He has contested elections from Govindganj in 2015 but lost to the LJP candidate.

Congress party, which is quite vocal since past days regarding the Hathras case in which a Dalit woman was allegedly raped and tortured to death, has given a ticket to a candidate who is accused of running a sex racket and had a sexual harassment case against him.

In 2017, Brajesh Pandey was charged under the stringent law on sexual crimes against children- the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He had to resign as party’s state vice-president also after a minor Dalit girl accused him of sexually abusing her.

The victim, a Dalit minor girl and a daughter of a former Congress minister has named Pandey along with a leading businessman and son of a retired IAS officer, Nikhil Priyadarshi, for sexually abusing her over some time. The girl had claimed Priyadarshi had promised to marry her. However, the victim later realized that the accused, along with others, was running a sex racket.

The girl has also demanded the investigation from senior officials as she feared that her case might get diluted due to the involvement of politically connected people.

There were reports also that as Brajesh is a brother of well known ‘neutral’ journalist, several attempts were made to suppress the matter.

However, in a bizarre twist to the case, the victim chose to compromise before the hearing, saying that she is ready to marry the accused.
