Rahul Gandhi hauled by Election Commission

Showing scant respect to the Model code of conduct, Congress Party hoisted a 10 x 25 feet banner on the wall of the house of one Ram Vachan, resident of village Sarai Khema in Amethi constituency. The banner was pasted without the permission of the house owner.  The Election Commission promptly issued notice to Congress President Rahul Gandhi for the violation of the law after the banner was spotted by the flying squad was brought to EC’s notice.  Seven more such banners were found pasted at different locations of the constituency.

Congress president and Amethi candidate Rahul Gandhi has been given 24 hours to explain the banner, which carried the logo of Congress and Rahul Gandhi’s  photograph and was written, ‘ Published by All India Congress Committee, 24 Akbar Road, New Delhi-110011’. It said: “Ab Hoga Nyay”. However, the name, address and mobile number of Printer and Publisher was missing.

The poll panel said action will be taken if the Congress chief is unable to give a satisfactory reply.

The Model code of conduct is a set of guidelines to conduct free and fair elections and to regulate political parties and their candidates. Article 324 of the Constitution empowers Election Commission to crack the whip under these guidelines.  It comes into force on the day of announcing the elections, so for the 2019 elections it came into effect from March 10, 2019 and will keep in effect till May 23, 2019. In 2013, under the orders of Supreme Court, the guidelines regarding manifestos were also brought under its purview.

The Congress president is pitted against BJP’s Smriti Irani from Amethi in the current Lok Sabha elections. Smriti had lost from the seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections by a narrow margin. Amethi, a traditional bastion of the Gandhi family, will go to polls on May 6.
